Réka & István

István grew up in Subotica, former Yugoslavia, and was committed to birds from a very young age. He graduated from the University of Szeged in Hungary in 1997 with a degree in ecology, followed by 3 years of postgraduate studies in ornithology.

Réka studied ecology, ethnography and recently got involved in psychology. They met at the university, got married and settled down in the lovely little village of Tiszaalpár in 2000. They have 4 children, the grown-up triplets and a boy of 12.

Both have been working in the Kiskunság National Park for nearly 23 years, István as a full time ranger while Réka as an environmental educator working with kids. She decided to dedicate all her energies to the family lodge in 2022 where she caters for all needs of guests. István is still a ranger and for the last 10 years he has been organising birdphotography trips and guiding birdwatching tours in Hungary and Eastern Europe, but has visited Middle East, Australia, Mongolia, the Balkans, etc.

Reka speaks English and German, István's main languages are English and Serbo-Croatian but speaks some Spanish and German, too.

TESTIMONIALS

As a professional photographer and film-maker as well as an occasional host of photo tours I have used many hides all across Europe before. Istvan's and Reka's hides are among the best! They are situated in a species-rich and picturesque part of Hungary and they consider all aspects which are crucial for photographers like different light conditions and appealing perspectives. Istvan's ecological knowledge is outstanding and makes a real difference and he is always willing to share it with his clients. Best basecamp in the area? Their lodge!
